Two women sustained serious injuries when a Chevy pickup truck drove into a crowd of people watching fireworks on a California sidewalk Sunday night.

Officers with the Anaheim Police Department responded to an emergency call reporting the collision at approximately 9:40 p.m. local time and found the two victims suffering from “major injuries,” Sgt. Jacob Gallacher said.

The two women, ages 22 and 44, were both from the area, police said, according to KTLA. Police did not immediately identify whether there was any relation between the two women.

The driver of the truck was driving in an “erratic manner,” which caused the vehicle to jump a curb and strike the two pedestrians, Gallacher said.

“The car did a burnout first,” a witness told KTLA. “He stopped. He tried showing off in front of his family members which [were] across the street and he lost control.”

The “tire caught” and the driver then went straight into the crowd, the witness said.

The driver, who was briefly detained but then released by police, was evaluated by authorities and determined not to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol following the accident, Gallacher said.

The Washington Examiner reached out to the Anaheim Police Department for comment.

The holiday weekend’s festivities saw several injuries across the country. Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender Matiss Kivlenieks died of chest trauma from an errant fireworks mortar blast, and fireworks set off prematurely Sunday morning in Maryland’s Ocean City caused minor injuries to some employees of the fireworks company.

The city of Chicago also experienced a high rate of shootings over the holiday weekend, with 74 people injured and 14 killed since Friday night.
