Whether President Trump chooses to concede the election or not, Twitter will hand over the @POTUS account on its platform to President-elect Joe Biden on Jan. 20, 2021.
The social media giant is “actively preparing to support the transition of White House institution Twitter accounts on Jan. 20th, 2021,” Twitter spokesman Nick Pacilio said.
“As we did for the presidential transition in 2017, this process is being done in close consultation with the National Archives and Records Administration,” Pacilio told Politico on Friday.
The public administration accounts for the White House, vice president, and the first lady will also be transferred on that date. Pacilio confirmed that the accounts will be reset to zero tweets and no personal information would be shared between the outgoing Trump team and the incoming Biden group.
The move shouldn’t trouble Trump too much as he has used the account @RealDonaldTrump as his vehicle for communication during most of his nearly decadelong career on the platform, including his four years in the Oval Office.
Trump and his closest allies have refused to concede the election and have refused to participate in transition procedures, including the handing over of digital assets such as government Twitter accounts.
