Whatever you thought The Wolf of Snow Hollow was, it’s not that. Or at least, it’s clearly not the blood-soaked horror fest implied by the stylish poster, and hinted at throughout the trailer that was released last month. But as is on display in the exclusive clip from the film provided to Decider, the modern werewolf riff is… Very funny?
Written by, directed by and starring Jim Cummings (not the voice of Winnie-the-Pooh, the other Jim Cummings), The Wolf of Snow Hollow finds a small-town sheriff named John Marshall (Cummings) dealing with a series of gruesome murders. Though the residents quickly jump to thinking the killer is a werewolf, the increasingly harried Marshall insists it’s a man, and werewolves don’t exist.
Not helping things? The killer only strikes on a full moon, rips the bodies to shreds, and like a certain wolf in a story about a girl wearing a red hood, seems to have a thing for women wearing crimson.
In the clip, impressively shot all in one take, Marshall stalks around a crime scene trying to manage everything. Only, the alcoholic sad-sack is barely managing himself as he’s approached on all sides by the news media, worried residents, and even calls from his family (who hates him). It’s also a microcosm for the movie itself, which, according to reviews, mixes comedy, drama, impressive filmmaking chops — Cummings is known for the SXSW Grand Jury Award winning Thunder Road) — and gore in moderation, when necessary. Plus, what horror fan doesn’t love a tease of blood on snow?
The Wolf of Snow Hollow also stars Robert Forster in his final movie role before he sadly passed away, as well as comedian Riki Lindhome and American Vandal breakout star Jimmy Tatro. The movie is currently in theaters, wherever theaters still exist, as well as available on demand from Orion Pictures.
