If Grey’s Anatomy was a person, it would be going on college tours right now, that’s how old it is. We can’t believe this baby is all grown up. As the show nears the end of its seventeenth season, the question on everyone’s mind is, will this series be back for another year?

HAS GREY’S ANATOMY BEEN RENEWED FOR SEASON 18?

The short answer is: no. But that doesn’t mean that it won’t be! Renewal negotiations have been ongoing over the last few months, as Ellen Pompeo, who plays Meredith Grey, and ABC’s parent company, Disney, attempt to come to an agreement about Pompeo’s salary for a potential 18th season.

SO YOU’RE SAYING THE FATE OF GREY’S ANATOMY LIES IN ELLEN POMPEO’S HANDS?

Pompeo is not just the titular star of the show, but she also executive produces it, and she’s the highest-paid actress in a prime-time drama series. Pompeo stated in 2020 that the 17th season could be its last, as her contract is set to end when the season ends. “We don’t know when the show is really ending yet, But the truth is, this year could be it,” she told Variety, in reference to the 17th season. “I mean, this is the last year of my contract right now. I don’t know that this is the last year? But it could very well could be.”

ABC Entertainment President Karey Burke stated in 2020, “Grey’s Anatomy will live as long as Ellen is interested in playing Meredith Grey.”

Series regulars Chandra Wilson and James Pickens Jr. Williams are also in contract negotiations with Disney.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR THE SEASON 17 FINALE OF GREY’S ANATOMY?

Grey’s Anatomy showrunner Krista Vernhoff has stated that the uncertainty of knowing if the show will return means she has had to plan “a season and a finale that could function as either a season finale or a series finale.” Vernhoff says, “I’m planning for both contingencies and it’s hard and it’s not ideal. It’s not where I wish we were.”

“I’ve told them that I have to know before I’m making the finale what we’re making. Because there are a couple of character threads that will change. I’ve got plans for both contingencies. Either there will be closure or I will build something in that allows me to have a bit of a cliffhanger and a thread for next season.”

The seventeenth season has already seen the departures of Giacomo Gianniotti who played Andrew DeLuca, who was killed off in episode 7, and Jesse Williams will depart the show on May 20, after twelve seasons playing Jackson Avery.

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 9/8c on ABC.
