Vice President-elect Kamala Harris marked the eighth anniversary of the Sandy Hook shooting by calling for “common-sense” gun reform.

“Today marks 8 years since 20 first-graders and 6 educators were murdered at Sandy Hook Elementary School,” the California Democrat tweeted on Monday. “To honor the lives lost in this terrible tragedy, it’s past time we implement common-sense gun safety reforms to keep our children safe.”

President-elect Joe Biden echoed Harris’s call for gun reform, saying on Monday that thoughts and prayers are “not enough.”

“Eight years later, there have been plenty of thoughts and prayers, but we know that is not enough,” Biden said in a prepared statement Monday. “Together with you and millions of our fellow Americans of every background, all across our nation, we will fight to end this scourge on our society and enact commonsense reforms that are supported by a majority of Americans and that will save countless lives.”

Twenty first-graders and six teachers were killed on Dec. 14, 2012, at Sandy Hook Elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut, after 20-year-old Adam Lanza, a deranged former student, stormed the school and opened fire.
